Health promotion

Health promotion has been defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as “the process of enabling people to increase control over their health and its determinants, and thereby improve their health”.

By promoting health, the Croatian Red Cross endeavours to spread knowledge on the importance of health and influence the change of harmful behaviour and bad habits that lead to illness and addictive diseases. The aim is to contribute to adoption of healthy lifestyle of each individual, their family and whole community.

Red Cross branches implement various public health activities: lectures and workshops, run health clubs and counselling centres, mark important days dedicated to health (i. e. World Tuberculosis Day, World Heart Day, World Diabetes Day). Special attention is paid to the World Health Day that is celebrated on 7 April each year to mark the anniversary of the founding of World Health Organization in 1948. Each year a theme is selected to highlight one priority area of public health concern.
