Harm Reduction

Harm reduction programme (run in Zagreb, Zadar, Nova Gradiska and Krapina) is conducted for active injection drug users (IDUs). The activities are aimed at preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS and hepatitis B and C among the active injection drug users and at improving and securing treatment of addictive diseases with the final aim of full resocialization of addicts. Croatian Red Cross on annual basis on average: takes care of 2,100 drug users; distributes 26,000 sterile needles and syringes; collects 15,000 used needles and syringes; anonymously and without charge tests around 200 persons for hepatitis C and around 70 persons for HIV.

These programs are conducted in line with the National Strategy on Combating Narcotic Drugs Abuse in the Republic of Croatia.

Croatian Red Cross participates in the education on harm reduction programmes of the representatives of other National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
